La Casona de San Marcos

The donation of the wealthy Spaniard Antonio Correa Ureña made it possible to build the building commonly known as the "Casona de San Marcos" in 1605. There, the "Compañía de Jesús" founded the "Noviciado de San Antonio de Abad".
The Jesuits were expelled from Peru by Viceroy Manuel Amat y Juniet by order of the crown in September 1767 and had to abandon all their properties, including the novitiate, which closed its doors.
Later, in 1867, Minister José Simeón Tejada ordered the transfer of the "Universidad San Marcos" to the convent. This move was progressive and was legalized during the government of Manuel Prado (1872-1876).
The "Faculty of Law" was located in the "Patio de los Maestros", the "Patio de los Naranjos" was occupied by the "Facultad de Letras y Educación"; the "Patio de los Chicos", by the "Facultad de Ciencias, Química y Física"; and the "Patio de los jazmines", by the "Facultad de jurisprudencia". The fifth courtyard overlooked the orchard.
Between the "Patios de Letras" and "Patios de los jazmines" is located the "Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Loreto" (Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto), also called "Salón de Grados de Letras". This is one of the most beautiful rooms of the Casona San Marquina.
Its vault has thirteen beautiful paintings from the middle of the 18th century, inspired by saints and Doctors of the Church, such as San Agustín, Santo Tomas de Aquino and others.
In front of the "Patio de los jazmines" is located the impressive "Salón General", formed by court, steps and wooden galleries, dating from the late eighteenth century. The most important ceremonies of the University, such as graduations, solemn sessions and seminars, are currently held in this hall of debate and controversy. ceremonies of the University, such as graduations, solemn sessions and seminars.
After the change of location to the current university city due to the increase in student population, in 1995, the old Casona became the headquarters of the "Centro Cultural de San Marcos", which includes the "Museo de Arqueología y Antropología", the "Museo de Arte", the "Biblioteca España", the "Archivo Histórico Domingo Angulo", the "Oficina de Turismo" and the "Centro Universitario de Folklore", as well as the choir, the "tuna" and the university band.
